Kilimanjaro Huts
Marangu Route, Kilimanjaro National Park, Tanzania
The Marangu Route is the only trail on Mount Kilimanjaro where climbers sleep in solid, roofed mountain huts rather than tents. Three permanent hut complexes are spaced along the ascent, each run by Kilimanjaro National Park (KINAPA) and staffed with rangers.
- Mandara Huts (2,700m) – the first night’s stop, a cluster of A-frame cabins nestled in the montane rainforest, close to the Maundi Crater viewpoint.
- Horombo Huts (3,720m) – the largest and busiest camp, perched on the moorland with sweeping views of Mawenzi. Used on both the ascent and descent, and for an acclimatization day.
- Kibo Huts (4,700m) – the final stone-built shelter in the alpine desert, the launch point for the midnight summit push to Uhuru Peak.
Accommodation is simple and communal: shared sleeping rooms with bunk beds and mattresses, dining huts where hot meals are served, and basic toilet facilities. Solar lighting is available at the lower huts. Because they offer shelter from the elements, the huts make the Marangu Route a popular choice in the rainy season and for climbers who prefer a bed to a tent.
Hut space is booked as part of your Marangu climb package and is allocated by the park on a first-come basis, so early reservation through a licensed operator is recommended.
