Kilimanjaro Camps
Machame, Lemosho, Rongai & Northern Routes, Kilimanjaro National Park, Tanzania
Every Kilimanjaro route except Marangu is a full-service camping climb, with nights spent in tented campsites strung along the trail. Your crew of porters races ahead each day to pitch two-person mountain tents, set up a mess tent for dining and prepare a portable toilet before you arrive — so camp is ready and waiting after every stage.
The camps are scattered across the mountain’s different approaches:
- Shira 1 & Shira 2 – high on the western Shira Plateau, on the Lemosho and Machame routes.
- Barranco & Karanga – dramatic valley camps beneath the Great Barranco Wall, shared by the Machame and Lemosho trails.
- Moir Hut, Buffalo (Pofu) & Third Cave – remote, quiet camps on the Northern Circuit and Rongai routes.
- School Hut & Barafu – the high base camps used for the summit assault.
- Crater Camp (5,700m) – the ultimate pitch, inside Kilimanjaro’s summit caldera for strong, well-acclimatized climbers.
Camping lets you follow the most scenic and best-acclimatizing routes on the mountain, fall asleep under exceptional star-filled skies and wake above the clouds. All camping equipment and camp staff are included in your climb package; you simply need a warm sleeping bag rated for high altitude.
